Breathe in Relaxation  Breathe out Tension

Massage Therapist

Rebecca Wissman

I'm Becky, originally from Stockholm, Sweden and I've been a massage therapist since 2017. I'm based at the Biddenden Family Chiropractic clinic at Bloomsburys Biddenden where I treat clients regularly - as well as working remotely across the Kent/Sussex border.  I have the great pleasure and fortune to work alongside practitioners such as chiropractors, massage therapists, personal trainers, homeopaths, nutritionists, reflexologists and counsellors.   After travelling the world as a yacht stewardess and having completed a Bachelor of Arts in Ethnology, project management and curating - I decided to fulfil my passion for health and wellbeing by becoming a Massage Therapist. I've treated numerous clients in various locations such as ski resorts, onboard luxury yachts, at Spa's, Retreats and offices. My ultimate dream is to work in a holistic wellness centre that combines a healthy café & juice bar with massage, yoga classes and an art gallery. And for massage therapy to become accessible at work places, schools and within the NHS as an essential and affordable part of our everyday life. That Prevention of disease becomes a priority instead of waiting for a cure. Having regular massage treatments has a number of benefits to our health, mood and wellbeing. If you haven't yet tried it out - drop me a message and I'll explain what it's all about. I'm looking forward to meeting & treating you soon!

This can be booked either in clinic using an inclined massage couch or on a floor mattress in the comfort of the mothers home. The pressure and massage techniques used will be gentle from a side lying position and/or on the back with an inclined backrest only for a short time as laying on the back at the later stages of pregnancy is best avoided. For postnatal massage the massage techniques, positions and supporting props will be adjusted to the mothers need by the time of the massage. Sidelying positions may feel familiar and still comfortable and if she would like to keep the baby next to her.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can massage help treat terminal or chronic illness?

Massage therapy can be incredible beneficial for an individual suffering from a terminal illness - both from a physical, emotional and psychological point of view. A various range of massage techniques can be applied and tailored to the individuals need in terms of stroke pressure, direction and rhythm depending on the specific goals and aims of the treatment. Massage therapy is known to provide a number of benefits such as a reducing muscular tension, pain, psychological stress and to improve sleep. The increased blood flow from massage helps maintain healthy muscles and improve range of movement and muscular function.

How should I prepare for my first massage treatment?

Please arrive 5-10 min prior to the appointment to allow time to fill in the intake form and for Becky to make an initial consultation. It is recommended to stay hydrated before and after a massage as the water helps flush toxins out that's been released from the massage.

Wear loose comfortable clothing and breath normally as it helps your muscles to relax. Don't hesitate to communicate during the treatment if there's anything that needs adjusting in terms of pressure, feeling too hot or cold etc. for you to feel more comfortable.

What may I expect from my first massage?

Stressed, knotty and tensed muscles may lead to inflammation and toxin build up in the body. It can block the oxygenated blood and essential nutrients from being distributed to where they need to go. Having a massage starts to break up and release those built-up toxins as the therapist apply pressure using various strokes on your muscles. Massage gets your blood and oxygen circulating as they should. You may therefore feel a bit warm and your skin tone may turn a bit pink and red.

Occasionally, you may experience any of the following reactions up to 24-48 hours after treatment; this is known as a contra-action and is the body's response to the treatment: Headache, Dizziness or nausea, Muscles may feel tired and sore, Increased urination or passing stools, Increased thirst. These reactions are common and perfectly normal and means that toxins are being expelled from the body, so that it may re-balance and cleanse itself. N.B. In the unlikely event that you experience any severe pain or discomfort, please seek advice from your GP.

Why is regular massage beneficial?

Modern lifestyles tend to have a detrimental effect on the muscular skeletal system. The way we move, lift, bend and spend longer periods sitting may shorten or lengthen the muscle fibres. When muscles become tensed, shortened or weakened, issues can occur in these areas and have an negative impact on our posture. Massage therapy focuses on correcting these issues, easing pain, stiffness and fatigue and improves flexibility and range of motion.

While promoting relaxation and reducing stress, massage also has the benefits of improving circulation and boosting our immunity. It's know to improve sleep, reduce anxiety and promote recovery of soft tissue injuries.

To keep muscles relaxed and 'knot free' it's recommended to have massage treatments every 4-6 weeks. Massage is not just a luxury - it's a way to a happier, healthier life.
